Kaufman County Poor Farm Museum in Kaufman Texas
by Martha Decker on Sep.13, 2009, under Kaufman County Poor Farm
This is a post to be continued…….
At one time all of the counties in Texas had a poor farm. Today Kaufman County is the only county that still owns the poor farm. All the rest of the poor farms are in private hands. This one is maintained by the Kaufman County Historical Commission. They have worked hard to raise fund for restoration for years. This first photo is but one of the original buildings on the farm…..

Just contact the Kaufman County Historical Commission to ask. You may have to present your request to the commissioners during their monthly meeting.

Hi, I’d like to visit the Poor Farm after doing some research on it, is there anyone we must speak to about going there, or is it free to roam grounds? I’m interested in all the buildings there and the graveyards. Thanx!

The Poor Farm is behind the old sheriff’s building and the historical commission is housed there. You just need to call them before going and you should be able to wander about.

Hi,
My name is Rachael, I lived with my family on this farm in the late 80s early 90s. We move when I was 13, and were sad to leave, because of many good memories we had living here. The picture of the barracks above makes me feel homesick a little. I found this site today, because I began to wonder if the odd sightings we had on the farm were will o wisps. We saw many odd things while living on the farm, and often didn’t know whether we were dealing with physical or spiritual encounters. There was a time when my dad was so convinced someone was in the attic ( accessible from the storage room connected to the backporch) that he began to yell at them loudly until they became silent. Another time someone activated our electricity, when we had had it turned off. Another time a fire started while we were away, and the firemen said it was from a candle left in the window ( we never kept candles in the window) . Two times we saw will of the wisps, I am convinced that is what they were, one fell to the ground and vanished at my feet, at the south west corner of the house. The other was going through the tree branches slowly , on the same corner , but further from the house. There was a time I saw what looked to me like a guerrilla on all fours run through the high grass behind the Barracks( that is what we were told the above building was called) he disappeared at the back door of the building, although the door never opened. A red clad man at the top of a tree in the nearby wooded area disappeared after being seen by my brother and I. Anyway, all that to say, thanks for validating me and my families experiences here, and yes, it’s probably a good place to investigate for paranormal activities.

Hello my name is Brenda and I am the founder and investigator for A Haunting We Will Go Paranormal Investigations. My mother and father were both raised in Kaufman and Scurry and have told me stories of the poor farm. I’ve been there and it feels very electrical. Would you think the Historical Commission would consider letting us do an investigation? We could charge which would raise money to help fund the restoration? Just an idea that maybe you could run by them. Thanking you in advance
January 8th, 2010 on 8:24 am
Hello, an investigation is a thought. I have lived in the area since 1985 and have heard quite a few stories about Peeltown, but not Scurry. I an the founder of Cedar Creek Lake Paranormal Society, http://cclp.wordpress.com, and have thought about getting an investigation together for the Kaufman Poor Farm. I am also on the Kaufman County Historical Commission. We meet next week. Maybe your group and mine could set up an investigation together. I will talk to the historical commission when we meet. This may be an item that will have to be put on our next agenda, not sure, but will find out. In the meantime you can contact me at txcclps@gmail.com. I have been to the poor farm many times, written feature articles and taken photographs, but there are only two places that I “feel” any unusual energy – and that is very dim. I haven’t heard any stories about paranormal activity there either, but would love to hear any stories if they are out there.

I hope to add much more about the poor farm. The idea is to help the historical commission raise additional funds to complete restoration.

I appreciate your comments. I don’t have a problem with someone leaving a realistic comment as I like to do the same. Your web page gets linked to that way, but I delete hundreds of spams just because they are what they are. Akismet is good at catching and holding many posts until I approve if they look like spam. I requeire the post to be in English because this is my blog, it is G rated and I want to know what is being said! Hope you continue to visit and read. Your comments are welcomed.

Stay tuned as I have a lot of information to add about the poor farm.

I’m not sure of the exact number except quite a few. I wrote a historical feature for The Monitor newspaper a few years ago. I had some great pix and was able to go through fascinating records of who stayed there while it was open. It also housed prisoners.

Interesting, I’ve always heard about the poor farm but wasn’t aware there used to be one in each county. How many people could this one house?
